| You don't just spend 12 years in the music scene and get nothing accomplished. Being one of the few
remaining punk threesomes to still exist, Alkaline Trio deserves some respect for belonging to that
elite group. And as "Agony & Irony" is their first full-length in 3 years, I wanted to check out how
their first album with major label backing would be. They have been through so much, (5 albums,
dozens of EPs/Demos, and live stuff) I'm sure they will do what they always do and deliver the goods
after being in the game as long as they have been.
Inspecting the album further, I had to chuckle at the fact that the producer was Josh Abraham of
Limp
Bizkit, Staind, Linkin Park, Crazy Town, producer fame. Needless to say I was a bit worried. Would
an influential band in the formation of modern day punk take that turn down alt-rock alley and fade
like many other acts have? Well the answer is double sided. If you were a fan of the catchy guitars
and fast tempos, then you have nothing to worry about because they are still around and sound
clearer with major label production.
The darker lyrics that fans have become accustomed to have been scaled back and been replaced by a
less serious tone with spots of seriousness. This change might have some crying foul, but it doesn't
hurt the music too much and if you look close at songs like "Over And Out" you will see the spirit
of their morbid side come out. Alkaline Trio's music is intriguing that way. It makes you want to
dance to its tempo and then it will hit you with a chair of creepy lyrics and dramatic showmanship
that makes you want to make your peace with the end of a shotgun.
Maybe that’s a bit much, but besides a few reconfigurations with their lyrics and a more produced
sound, not much has changed with Alkaline Trio. And now-a-days that is apparently something hard to
find. Bands seem to all want to experiment (doesn't pertain to formulaic rock bands) and change
there sound so much that they turn out to be nowhere close to the band they started as. "Agony &
Irony is a continuation of a fine set of releases from Alkaline Trio that I'm sure hardcore fans and
new comers can both enjoy.
