Normally I don't listen to the directions of some band names. If I did, I might never be able to lie (Underoath) or be able to stay alive long (Drop Dead Gorgeous). But for the Solid State backed band Inhale/Exhale, I didn't feel too bad about breathing so I wanted to check out their newest album "I Swear..." There are a lot of melodic hardcore (Christian) bands out there and I hope these guys can separate themselves from the rest of the pack or else I'll stop wasting my breath.

Different than their label mates, I/E explores a more thrash oriented side of hardcore, to go along with their snippets of melodic guitars. Instead of going the scream/sing combo route (ala Underoath), they choose a more growly shout/ punch drunk hardcore edge to take the stage more frequently then a singing voice and melody. I really enjoy the talent that their guitars protrude while they venture into harmony filled riffs and mix it with Destroy The Runner-esqe vocals.

Their harder side seems superfluous in retrospect as it gets in the way of the other non brutal sections. Some of their breakdowns and rougher guitars sound alright but the inclusion of off kilter guitar notes in the thrash sections just make it feel even more like it shouldn't be included. Don't get me wrong though, the chaotic nature of the whole album works well and while I enjoy the harmonious parts more, the raging guitars don't get in the way.

So if you are into melodic hardcore then you should rest easy knowing I/E is a fine band to pick up. "I Swear..." has rough edges but the melodic spirit lives on through it. Plus the brutal sections tend to grow on you after awhile. Either way, breathing has never been so fun while doing it to Inhale/Exhale. I Swear...
