| Now I don't want to call these guys old, but if I made a bet that stated these guys had a mid-life
crisis and started an indie pop band to mix things up, I bet I wouldn't be wrong. That being said
the Baskervilles, three guys and one girl from New York, have a new album out called "Twilight." The
last time I read the word Baskerville off anything I was reading a Sherlock Holmes book and I'm just
hoping this album is as good as that was. (yes, I'm serious.)
Well while I was expecting a certain type of new-wave music to hit me when I first heard "Twilight,"
it felt more like an upbeat love fest. Poppy indie rock prances around with the help of dual
male/female vocals, bubbly riffs, and the assortment of instruments that help lighten the mood of
the album (trumpets, pianos, bells, acoustics etc).
The album moves pretty fast and the assortment of instruments add that diversity that keeps you
interested (even though only for a short while). This upbeat fest of light indie feels quant and the
flaming lips lover in your life with enjoy this. Truthfully, there isn't much but a steady stream of
new-wave indie here and while that's not a bad thing, I just got bored with it fairly quickly. After
hearing so much of the same genre it starts to wash over you and I guess I could chalk it up to
unoriginality, but I won’t with this album.
Baskervilles are original with their varying instruments and light/frothy indie rock. This is what
makes this CD nice, but don't expect anything to be mind blowing. If you are a fan of quirky new
wave indie then you are in luck, but if you have heard a lot of the same (like me) then you might
want to steer clear and divulge into other things that haven't been explored.
