When i first heard that Microtia was apparently "a bunch of hardcore kids that smoke weed and listen to led zeppelin" I took a second to think to myself would I even want to hear what that was? At first the answer was no, but because they are from Portland and because I sucked it up, I got a chance to sit down and review their latest EP "Distance Is Oval."

When I started listening, their sound seemed to run across the same lines as the dissonant efforts from Thrice and Mars Volta (minus the vocals on both). The songs themselves all sound large and are compiled with thick reverb. "Distance Is Oval" races around with a steady tempo and even has some hard riffs that make you think you are actually listening to prog. rock group.

This EP may get swallowed up in dissonance periodically but what lies underneath is what should be paid some attention. Guitars with effects and a mixture of gentle and hard riffs make the rhythm of this effort exciting to listen to. I was surprised at how good this EP was, even with a few faults. Don't let distance get in the way between you and this album.
