| I'll say it. It was me listening to the nu-metal wave of KoRn, Disturbed, and Linkin Park back in
early 00's. I regret nothing. That being said, I have watched nearly every nu-metal band from that
era crash and burn or slowly fizzle. Distubed is a bit different in the fact they are still putting
forth the same hard rock that they became famous for and they still have a following. Hate the genre
or not, there's just something about a Disturbed song that gets you pumped up. After their last
album "10,000 Fists" I wanted to see if they could continue giving us the good stuff. Their new
album "Indestructible" should be a nice window into their recent musings.
Starting from the (somewhat cliché) siren intro of "Indestructible" which merged into the song, I
was trying to think of the music as "same old same old" but it was just too infectious for my brain
to not recognize its driving riffs and signature Draiman vocals. To those who seem to be indifferent
to Disturbed, you will probably see little difference from this album and what they have put out in
the past, but to a trained ear, it has morphed just a bit. And even still, if it's not broken don't
fix it. More effects laden songs are included in this album, which was a nice diversion from the
norm. The guitars always seem walk the line of being impressive and on par but only because these
guys play by the "hard rock, slow geezer solo" motto most of the time. Maybe I've just been spoiled
by
adventurous metalcore bands with quick fingers. Either way, Disturbed guitars and their familiar
tempo are still a nice groove to listen to.
Disturbed's chord melody mixing with Draiman's vocals and his vocals in general are other selling
points of this album as he
somehow matches every twist and turn the strings take. I'm going to say that if you already like
Disturbed then you will enjoy this, because it is some of the same, but it also sports surprising
new
ventures for the band. If you hate the band, and thinking about their nu-metal roots makes your
stomach twist, then there's a chance this album could have been the best of all time and you would
still not listen to it. In my honest opinion, Disturbed isn't the band with in-depth lyrics or
intricate guitars (sometimes yes, but rarely), but they manage to twist and freshen their familiar
tunes and riffs into something new and harder every time. They also include a taste of their old sound to give the fans of "Down With The Sickness" a fresh memory of their previous albums. Plus sometimes all you need it a good song
that you
can crank load and just rock off to. Yes even you. So check out this good record not only because
it's quality Disturbed, but also because it is one of only a few examples of a band making it out of
nu-metal's deathly grasp.
