7.5 (out of 10)

It seems that even though I hadn't heard of Admiral Twin before this effort, they had been around long enough to make 4 records before it. "The Center Of The Universe" is the Oklahoma trio's fifth studio album and with influences that range from Fountains Of Wayne to The Beatles, I was both intrigued and hopeful about it. It's hard to find 3 person bands around now-a-days but Admiral Twin seems eager to continue their long standing musical career. Let's see if I feel the same way.

Coming fully loaded with 15 tracks, there’s no way you can say Admiral Twin didn't put enough forward. Pumped full of old school pop punk, we dance along a line of repeating guitars and light drum beats. The Fountain Of Wayne similarities are apparent as many of the tracks sound like more matured versions of "Stacy's Mom." Crude analysis but you get the idea. The addition of effects to their tracks makes for an extra bit of tang that is the taste of Admiral Twin.

I will say that I like their style and the fact that it is an original take on an old sound makes it seem more fresh then some of the music out there today. They also take trips to atmospheric indie in songs like "Get Well Soon" which was a treat too. So I ended up getting more than I bargained for with this surprising album.

"The Center Of The Universe" reminds me of the recent movie "Across The Universe" because both of them have major Beatles influences and because they both surprised me. Now this isn't the savior of albums, but it's a quaint album that can be enjoyed from time to time.
