7.5 (out of 10)

According to the band, the making of this EP was a process. Never mind recording in such places as a water tower and places down south, this band has been through a lot in order to put this 7 track effort out. Apt title for what I hope is good music. Either way these four guys from Ohio formed Junior Revolution around 7 years ago, and after many lineup changes and touring, they have gotten the chance to play with some of the good up and coming bands and they are looking for their time in the spotlight. Well Jr. that's a process.

Even though this EP came out last year, I was intrigued to see what these guys were made of. I mean the design of the EP and its production were professional and that alone is something to be proud of when dealing with an up and coming band. Their sound is something different I must say. It often felt like it would try to burst into a catchy riff that you can expect from bands like Cartel, but it never quite gets it off the ground. Instead bass lines and stop-and-go tempo take control making their rhythm something you have to get used to.

Their guitars feel like a gentler take on Brand New and while they do ring in with melody, they take a bit of time to develop. The lyrics are what you would expect from a few guys in a rock band, not too simply and not too complicated. I will say what stood out for me most in this EP was the addition of quirky nuanced sound bytes from different things such as the sound of waves, a voicemail from Dave Matthews, and other effects that just brighten up the EP.

While Junior Revolution did inject a lot of new things in this effort, not all of them were good. Bipolar tempo at times made things a bit loopy and the vocal chemistry at points left me with a question mark above my head. But overall the sound effects and intricate guitars (including commanding bass lines) makes most of this EP top notch. Like the EP says, this is a process, and I think Jr. are on their way to making an effort that can be called great. For now, enjoy because it took a lot for it to reach your ears.
