| The last time I heard the words "Stay Classy" I was watching Anchorman and laughing at how funny
latin Ben stiller looked. This time around, we are no where neat San Diego and we are placed in
Wilmington North Carolina, which is the starting place for The Hottness. I guess these guys added
the extra "T" for it to sound more hot, but either way this 5-peice southern metal band have a new
record coming out called "Stay Classy" and I intended to do everything but be classy when reviewing
it.
So when an album starts off with the sound of pissing in the background, I don't think there is much
else that can be surprised about. These dirty southerners bring the slurry and energized rock that
remind you of bands such as Remove The Veil. The Hottness tapes together melodic guitars, crashing
drums, as well as screaming and monotone singing to complete their image. The drums seem to have a
controlling placement in the mix and they sometimes overpower much of the rest of the sound, which
can have songs start seemingly run together. The rest of the music, such as the singing vocals
(which sound like Cold), the intricate guitars, and the heavy bass, are all executed very well.
The screaming vocals aren't really bothering but they can distract from the better parts of the
record. But I really couldn't stop enjoying the overall pace of "Stay Classy" because it never
really slows down and it keeps the engines going the whole time. And with an album that has riffs
like roller coasters and singing that is solid (in a southern hard rock band kind of way), there is
no reason not to enjoy this effort. (except for the things mentioned above.)
So if you are in the mood for some nonstop southern metal with entertaining guitars and filling
drums then you are in for a good time. You might have to wade through the layered production, but
that is nothing to worry about if you have no idea what that means. Simplistic hard rock songs with
a metal spirit is what you get here and I'm fine with that. But these guys just seem to be those
smelly rock dudes that just personify the word "dirty." Perceptions of them aside, this album is an
album that will keep you listening for a few times.
