| I have sat back and watched Fearless Records put out some of the best compilations
of all time. The "Punk Goes" series has undergone many shifts from going metal, to
pop, to acoustic, and finally the next destination, Crunk. I must admit that I am a
fan of "good" rap/r&b and so hearing my favorite rap songs done by my favorite rock
bands just blew my mind. Originally titled "Yo! Indie Rock Raps" Punk Goes Crunk
has taken a while to get here, but it is upon us.
First off I want to say that the amount of songs and the diversity of the rap cover
choices are very impressive. We go from blatant crunk songs to gangsta rap to rap
to r&b, all hilariously presented by some of the most eccentric bands out to date.
While I simply loved almost every single song on the album, a few stood out to me.
Max Bemis' spoken word version of ODB's "I Got Your Money" is outstanding and funny
as hell. The creative and trancy version of Skee Lo's "I Wish" done by The Secret
Handshake is a perfect cover transformation done with style.
The Devil Wears Prada's cover of "Still Fly" was a surprise because of how good it
turned out to be (because I thought it was going to be the worst on the
compilation.) But I would have to say the best track is Scary Kids Scaring Kids'
version of "Notorious Thugs" which would make Biggie smile in his grave. There's
really no way you can go wrong, because you have very talented artists (some up &
coming and some already well known) and a slew of fantastic songs that are all done
with flair and passion. There are about 1 or 2 tracks that you might not listen to
every time but they are still fairly good.
So if you were to purchase one compilation all year and I mean ALL YEAR, this would
be the best thing to plop into your stereo and just giggle about how you can have
your cake (rap) and eat it too (rock). I pretty much feel "Punk Goes" is obligated
to make more volumes because of how amazing they all are. Keep it coming.
California Love.
