| Great googly moogly, I think my gaydar's been thrown. Not because of the sexy looking
man of mid-30s found flexing his abdominal muscles on the infomercial streaming on my
television at nearly 6am, but because of this new effort created by Arsonists Get All
the Girls titled "The Game of Life." After reading the back of this promo, I knew I
was going to have great fun with this review even if I didn't enjoy the music heard
within the third Century Media debut reviewed today.
Luckily for the boys in Arsonists Get All the Girls, I don't completely hate "The Game
of Life." I won't lie, I might be found playing the board game more often than actually
listening to this disc, but it's quite an acceptable piece. Many may consider this group
quite gimmicky, but I consider them to be a sarcasticly gay bunch of dudes just making
stereotypical grind music for the hell of it. Sure this type of grind hasn't found itself
played in my stereo often at all, but that's not to say "The Game of Life" is a horrible
release. It's speedy riffing and oddly danceable drumlines are pretty catchy even though
they prove to be a trademark to the whole 'scene-grind' genre. But just in case the odd
drumming and jazzy guitar riffing aren't enough for you, AGATG include completely awkward
sounding keyboard parts at random parts of the album. Sure they may seem entirely redundant
at times, but what the hell? The more random sounds beeping in your ear at once the better.
To give some credit to AGATG though, I will say that around "Tourtasia" the album takes a
turn that could be taken a lot more seriously.
I feel I must disclose the fact that this type of grind isn't my favorite type of thing
on the planet once more. But I think AGATG pull off the genre quite well. I can see uber
amounts of underage girls with AGATG covering their boobs on myspace.com now, so that must
be a good sign for the effect this band is having on the scene as of late. If you don't
buy this album merely for your enjoyment of this sound, please do it for the cute looking
bunny on the cover of the album because this is the first grind band I've ever seen put out
an album that is just straight up adorable. Just don't expect the music to be as adorable
as the album art.
P.S. There's already a mediocre MI band by the name of Doctor! Doctor! ripping off the
keyboard part in "Tourtasia" just a fun little tidbit.
