6.5 (out of 10)

Get on your spurs and rustle up some cattle is the first thing that comes to mind when listening to Deep Elm Records band “500 Miles to Memphis.”

Deep Elm, known for an eclectic lineup of artists, best know for releasing records by the “Appleseed Cast” and their long running album series “The Emo Diaries” and “This is Indie Rock,” still takes a risk releasing a alt-western album to a hipster crowd.

“500 Miles to Memphis” caters to a crowd that, unless it was ironic, wouldn’t be caught dead in a western bar. Yet some how could get the indie crowd behind them, ignoring the bands twang.

The band is part Ryan Adams, part Whiskeytown and part Old 97s, for good measure, will sell the band to those looking for a unique alt-country/indie sound. And songs like “Let It Rain” (whiskey and beer), “Broken Busted, Bloody” and it the records title track “Sunshine in a Shot Glass” will cater to a bar crowd despite what kind of music they like. But the record will be a very hard sell to everyone else.

Too underground for typical country/western fans, too county for those within the underground scene, and not flashy enough for everyone else, “500 Miles to Memphis” may go unnoticed. And it is unfortunate.
