| It almost seems to be predetermined that if you've got some friends who like to play instruments
in California, that you will always come out a growing indie rock band. Not to say that’s bad, I
love indie rock so when An Angle made their way up the hill in the early 2000's I made sure to pay
attention. The band seems to have something else though, could it be that vocalist Kris Anaya has
been compared to people like Bob Dylan and The Cure's Robert Smith? It's quite possible. But being
on the indie label Drive-Thru has its perks and we are all eager to hear their 3rd full length
album, "The Truth Is That You Are Alive."
Right from the start a quirky little melody of clamoring guitars and bar piano all assemble to
form a solid indie atmosphere. The vocals keep the sound securely tied to the ground with their
modest adequacies. Most of it actually sounds like it could have just hopped out of Toy Story
because of its basic setup of different musical layers. You can definitely sense an old spirit
when listening to the toned guitars and unique vocals. And it walks a fine line between folk rock and indie and that’s why people can relate to it as well as enjoy their catchy choruses. The lyrics are more of what you would expect from a solo song writer, that seem to be filled with lonely serenades of experience and journey. This not only adds to the authenticity of the lyrics but also of the sound the band creates.
"Clean And Gold" has a shaking and moving attitude that got me hooked with its old timey folk song
style that sings of an important moment in time with passion. It even has some jumbling guitars
that pick up the ordinary riffs that proceeded it with gusto. I saw Of Mice And Men at a theater a
little while back and "Going To Heaven" is the perfect song to put as a backdrop to it. Its subtle
guitars and whispering words are shimmering reminders of how touching An Angle has made their
music. "Ghost In The Mirror" was a great song as well, as its guitars and bass kept everything
energized with a faster pace. It would work as a radio hit (if that’s what you look for) but none
the less its still very catchy.
There is something special with An Angle I must say. Their old school folk style is a kind
remembrance to the good ol' days and the lyrics are genuine as well as a good natured story.
The indie flavor that comes along with being on Drive-Thru (through their favored producers etc)
adds that perfect extra indie feel to their music, making it more modern as well as exciting.
Those looking for a new slow and touching album to pull at your heart strings, then this is what
you need. In fact, anyone who doesn't hate light rock will love this album for its authentic and
honest feel. For all others, try looking at things in a different angle, you might feel more
alive.
