| With a production quality equivilent to the likings of Saosin's self-titled record
and Anberlin's traditional heartfelt, christian driven throaty vocal stylings, "Cities"
is really an album I didn't expect much out of. With the band's last release not even
being noticed by me and their even earlier "Blueprints For the Black Market," I found
myself tired of the album after only a couple listens. But this time around, Anberlin offers
an album that I could truly listen to over and over again. The band was always just ok in
my book. I was never a fanatic of their music, especially considering the only song I could
remember was "Ready Fuels". But I after already listening to it 6 times in a row, the
re-playability has yet to decrease and that's something Anberlin was never equipped with
before.
After the band's reasonably epic introduction, Anberlin completely surprised me, with
their first track "Godspeed". Many have heard this on the band's myspace before, but
I unfortunately passed this track up, strictly because of the predictions I had from the
band's past efforts. But let me tell you, after finally getting around to this track,
I've found myself flipping back to it over and over again. With this being the track that
gave me that Saosin-ish feeling from the instruments and production, I instantly fell
in love with "Cities". As "Godspeed" expires, A new tune is forced into my head. This
time around I encounter an unusual feeling as I hum the easily repeated "Adelaide (Adelaide),
You really had me going this time... Adelaide (Adelaide), you need to quit quit making a scene".
Now in no way are these lyrics overly original, but something about the way vocalist
Stephen Christian delivers them to listeners, keeps them stuck in your head until the
ever anthemic "A Whisper and A Clamor". Following the third catchy song in a row, Anberlin
tone things down for one of my favorite tracks on the album "The Unwinding Cable Car".
With this new approach, I feel as if the band is finally traveling a once uncharted area
only to come across a great treasure. This effect really struck me right from the beginning.
At first I thought "Hmmm.. This is kind of weird sounding" but the uniqueness of this
track stuck with me and proved to be another charm to "Cities" not to mention a frequently
visited area. Following this track, "Hello Alone" proved to be no competition for the
earier overly catchy tracks on the album, so this track ended up being skipped as well as the
following "Bury Your Head" (by Saosin) like "Reclusion". From hear on out, I found my
mind wandering on as I consistantly found myself multi-tasking during this portion of
the disc. But as soon as Anberlin takes another venture into their mellow experimentation
I found myself keenly listening as Christian belts out yet again, another one liner.
The words "I want to be your last first kiss that you'll ever have," echo through my
head minutes after as the album's time begins to expire. I think after this track,
the album was over for me. Something about the way it ended had me reflecting on it
through the last 2 tracks. So I almost feel as if it'd be more effective to switch
this track ("Inevitable") around with "Fin" because "Fin" really proved to be an over-
looked track in my book (at least until the epic closure).
With "Cities" I have a feeling Anberlin and Tooth & Nail Records are pushing themselves
above the "so-so" marker in their musical careers. I really think the band has found
the perfect formula for creating an amazing album and that's definitely evident when
listening through the epic sounds of their new effort. Could this band be the next big
thing? Honestly, with the right amount of publicity, I think Anberlin's "Cities" could
become a common denominator in many people's music collection. It has that conventional
rock sound overlayed with poppy melodies and unbelievably catchy hooks, that just grab
you and never let you go. Before this album, I would have probably not recommonded this
band to anybody. But after this noble effort, I believe Anberlin are finally heading
in the right direction.
