| Lost Ocean get the job done. It’s as simple as that. Foot tapping? Check. Catchy? Check. Hit single? Check. Repetitive? Check. Wait, is that a good thing? While the self-titled "Lost Ocean" does indeed offer hook laden tunes and a distinctive set of vocals, they can often be accused of hitting the right notes too many times. Now whether or not that’s a bad thing when essentially the band appears to be targeted towards the pop market is another issue.
Color me completely blown away. Most of the time when people try to mix the angler indie of bands like Brand New with the unabashed pop power of one of my more favorite bands Copeland they fail. They make the musical equivalent of a flipper baby. Sure it’s a baby, and babies are awesome. But it’s got flippers and no one likes flippers on a baby.
Lost Ocean has however some how mated these two types of music together into a beautiful bouncing child of musical goodness. While I fear they may find themselves falling into the same spot as Spitalfield, a band too good for their genre and scene, the sheer catchiness of this album is nuts. For those of you out there who are into soaring vocals Lost Ocean has a sound that i've been searching for day in and day out. From bouncy choruses to melody filled rockers. Lost Ocean comes to please and do just that. There isn't one track on this outrageously fun 10 track full-length debut, that I haven't completely fallen in love with.
What really makes Lost Ocean stand out from the rest of the pack is their ability to merge two types of rock. When I first bought their EP I knew this band could be something great a dose of Copeland and a little bit of themselves how the hell could you possibly go wrong? Seriously kids there are bands I love that have been doing this for years and years and I have yet to witness an album as strong as this. Lost Ocean is the real deal. A great real sound, great songs and passion out the wazoo. Let someone else buy the flipper baby bands. Check out this buddle of joy!
