Fusing all sorts of stylings across the metal scene together, Abysmal Dawn is not something for the delicate/easy going rock listener. This band shows us Death Metal at it's rawest and cuts through the scene bullshit metal. It's quite obvious that this band fuels it's style off of bands such as Vital Remains, Cryptopsy, and Decapitated to name a few. But with those influences, they have also tossed in their own stylings to create a Death Metal monster sure to chew you up and spit you out. With arpeggios sure to sweep you off your feet and Growls so low you can feel them eating away at the inside of your stomache it shouldn't be a surprise to anybody that this band is bringing back the true face of death metal.

Abysmal Dawn's "From Ashes" starts out with a teeth gnashing Introduction to what will be a ride not soon forgotten. I see "Impending Doom" as a perfect introduction to the cd. It's completely instrumental and isn't too fancy but it is something that will ring in your ears and serves as the perfect lead into their second song entitled "In the Hands of Death." After the introduction rings out we are spun right into one of the many classic death riffs heard throughout the cd, and then after breaking into a short harmony the brutal vocal stylings break into full force. Following "In the Hands of Death" is "Blacken the Sky" this track begins with a grinding guitars laced with intricate drum patterns then fades into the low bellows that make this band what they are. Range is something a lot of vocalists lack and in this song Abysmal Dawn proves that they've mastered the art of near second pitch changes and overlapping highs and lows. I find my favorite part of this song at about the 2:15 mark where the vocals, Guitars, Bass and Drums combine as one to deliver a powerful breakdown overlapped with yet another one of Abysmal Dawn's catchy riffs. To me it perfectly demonstrates how powerful this band delivers their music to their listeners.

Next we are brought back into the early 90's Death sound that has defined this band and made them what they are today with "Servants to Their Knees" This song well displays the way this band has mixed Thrash and Death into one powerful blend. As we transition into the 5th submission to this 9 part metal massacre, we experience more of the sweeping arpeggio action in another tasteful solo that is placed soundly at 2 minutes into the song. The song "Solitude's Demise" brings us back into the early thrash scene with riffs that repeat themselves in octives and harmonies picked with considerable amounts of speed and precision, and backed by the consistent low growls.

Following a different trend than the rest of the album "State of Mind" begins fast and then towards the middle of the song falls into a slow doom metalish riff and then progressively builds back up into the faster drumming and picking the song began with. The CD then ends with what i have found to be my favorite two songs, the first being "Salting the Earth" this song jumps straight into an all aground agressive feeling and then into a solo that is bound to melt your face off. The second song being "Crown Desire" which also like "State of Mind" has a different feel to it. I believe that this song mixes a few extra elements into the mixture including American Metal and Black Metal. The opening lick reminds me of something Lamb of God would play and then evolves throughout the song into black metal rhythms lead by a near minute long solo that happens to be my favorite one featured on the whole album, then shortly after coming to an abrupt halt to complete the compilation.

"From Ashes" has found itself as being one of my top favorite Metal CDs of '06 thus far. It perfectly blends all aspects of Metal into one sound, those aspects being Black Metal, Death Metal, Thrash, Grind, and even some songs containing a bit of Doom Metal. It's hard to compare this band to any other because of how unique of a sound they have, but i'd put them on the same level as Vital Remains or maybe Deicide. Be aware though, "From Ashes" is definately not for all audiences, only for the true metal head.
