| The first time I heard the name Ligeia was in Edgar Allan Poe's short story by the same name.
According to it she was a woman that was "beautiful, passionate, intellectual, raven-haired and
dark-eyed." Flash forward to the large breasted, oiled up woman on the cover of Ligeia's latest
outing "Bad News." Normally half naked chicks in spandex are never to be considered bad news, but
I'm sure the band was going to tell me otherwise. And boy have they been through the ropes. They
have only been around a few years and only released one record prior to their latest, but they still
have had loads of lineup changes (especially with drums and bass) and was sure to change their
sound for "Bad News."
They are considered metalcore and I quickly noticed a few similarities with the dredging guitars and
throaty singing that resembled Slipknot. Ligeia spreads on a more thick set of hardcore screams and
growls that differ from Corey Taylor, but the similarities are something to notice. In fact (pretty
much) the only time you get your complete fill of enjoyable melodic guitars is when you feel the
bridge coming and a solo is eminent, otherwise it stays on a mostly brutal riff trek.
I would like to say it feels like other bands in the genre such as Lovehatehero, but with a more
stiff and hardened sound. Sure there is still some velvety smooth Killswitch Engage like vocals but
for the most part it is different. Not wanting to use the word "nu-metal-like" at first, I then
decided it actually fits pretty well. Almost like a metalcore band with nu-metal roots. That being
said, "Bad News" is filled with simple guitar work for the most part and a lot of their sound/ideas
have been done before.
I don't normally grill a band too hard for being unoriginal but Ligeia crosses that line more so
than not so I must contest. Their flavorful singing vocals and spotted melodic guitars are enjoyable
but both aren’t delivered enough to make this release truly great. So it stands as a CD that has
been done before and done better, but still a nice metalcore album to check out if you have some
free time and a love for barely clothed women.
