All Time Low - Interview

How do you guys feel about the new record coming out soon?

>The upcoming release is a dream come true for us in so many ways; For one, it’s the first time our music is being released on an international scale - just to see our record in stores is going to be mind-blowing. We’re all so excited - people are responding to the songs we’ve been posting really positively… That’s just so cool for us. We’ve been doing this since we were 14, and to have it come together by 18 is such a rush.

How long did the album take to put together?

>We recorded the EP in about two weeks - Five of the seven songs were taken from our last, independent release, so the writing process for this project was short; we had just enough time to write a couple new ones for the release and get them on there. Essentially, this EP was about taking the best of what we had and making it better, while throwing in a few new jams as a taste of what’s to come.

Wheres the album title, Put Up Or Shut Up come from?

>Haha - Well, it’s a line from one of the songs, first and foremost, but I think it says a lot about where we stand in regards to our music and our collective outlook on life. We never set out to break any molds with our music. We’re playing pop, and we love it. In that sense, “put up or shut up” is synonymous with doing what you want to do - doing what you believe in. Either have the guts to do it, to stand up and make some kind of a statement, or shut up. Its as simple as that.

If you guys were to pick your favorite track on the new album what would it be and why?

>Collectively, we’d all have to say Coffee Shop Soundtrack. It feels like the strongest song on the release to us - it’s the song that you hear and say, “Yeah… That’s All Time Low” Running From Lions comes in at a close second for the sheer fact that it’s short, sweet and simple, but has an energy to it that we all feel when we listen to it.

I'll be completely honest I can't stop listening to the album it's incredibly addictive, what point did you want Put Up Or Shut Up to get across to your fans?

>Thank you. J Not to sound redundant, but we didn’t really set out to prove any kind of point - we were just writing and playing music that we love, but now that I look at it, I think we’ve unknowingly made a statement in that, as you said, you’re addicted. In the current scheme of things, pop music is often thought of as the ‘guilty pleasure’. We’re here to prove that it doesn’t have to be something you keep inside your closet for when your friends aren’t around. Just enjoy it… Your friends will too.

So how is being on the road with the new album only a few weeks away from being released and seeing the anticipation on the faces of your fans?

>Being on the road has been absolutely crucial for us this close to the release of the EP. We’ve made it available for pre-order at all shows prior to its official release in stores, so that kids who haven’t heard of us can see us live and immediately secure a copy of the record. Based on the positive response we’ve been receiving in every new town we play, we’re nothing but stoked for PUSU to hit shelves in July.

Moving on, what's your guys favorite song to play live?

>Definitely ‘Running From Lions‘. We generally open our set with it, and the straight-forward drive behind the song gives us the chance to completely rock out - it’s a great way to start the show; that kind of initial energy completely opens the crowd up and helps to create a very electric atmosphere.

What's the funniest story you have since you started playing music full time?

>Man, there have been so many, its hard to pinpoint a specific story. We’re all really into having a good time, so there’s rarely a moment, on-stage and off, when we aren’t having a blast. Things just happen… Onlookers would probably think we’re insane, no joke. We’ll break out into a full-on light saber battle 10 minutes prior to doors at a show - or silly-string the entire line out front of a venue, and then make up for it by hugging each and every person there. I recall several incidents of half-naked, dude on dude wrestling in various hotel rooms. Oh, and I can’t leave out the dance parties we’ve had at truck-stops with completely random people. Good times…

What's your most anticipated release of 2006?

>I’m really excited for the new Gym Class Heroes album, which coincidentally drops on the same day as our EP. Boys Like Girls also have a record coming out in August which is going to be amazing - trust me on that one.

Whatve you been listening to lately?

>I find myself constantly listening to the music of the bands we’re currently on tour with, so for me, the past week has been nothing but Cute Is What We Aim For, Boys Like Girls, and Forgive Durden. Its all great, too, so that’s a plus. I’m also really into the Jack’s Mannequin record at the moment.

What kind of things keep you busy when you aren't playing music?

>Eating, sleeping, the world wide web, and living for the moment. Simple, right?

Whats the one thing you and the band cant live without on the road?

>Each other.

Whats the craziest thing a fans done for you guys?

>Well, this one time, during a quest in which we were attempting to slay a mighty dragon, a fan jumped in front of its fire-breath which threatened to completely incinerate Rian, our drummer. That was pretty crazy. But for real, no ones ever done anything I’d consider “crazy”. People bake us cakes sometimes… I don’t know. The culinary arts can be pretty insane sometimes.

Whats your favorite place to eat on the road?

>Olive Garden! Unfortunately its generally out of our budget while on the road. L

How would you describe yourself to someone who hasn't yet heard you guys before?

>Our music is like driving with the windows down, mid-summer; Like having the night of your life at some party that you never expected to find yourself at… Its that simple, but its the simplicity that allows it to appeal to the listener. Just pick it up and fall in love - you don’t have to think about it if you don’t want to, and you definitely don’t have to worry about it cheating on you with someone else.

Well, that about wraps it up, Ive probably kept you all much longer than you like. Anything you'd like to say to the viewers of Skyline Press?

>It was a pleasure sitting down and answering these questions, absolutely no problem at all. For anyone who’s reading this interview - thank you so much for having an interest in this band, it means the world to us, and we love you for it. Hope to see you at a show sometime soon!
