Hey can you start by telling us your name and what you do in the band?
>My name is Randy Randall and I play guitar.
We know you guys got the band name No Age from a 1987 SST Records instrumental compilation, but I was wondering what drove you guys to listen to such an old compilation and then adopt it as your name?
>We’re definitely fans of the label SST and the bands on it. The compilation was something with interesting music. We listened to it and, as we were looking for names, we thought it would make a pretty cool name.
How do you guys feel about being featured on MTV's FNMTV and getting so much publicity in general?
>It’s fun, you know. What we’re doing is something a little different than what they would normally have on those shows. So, to get the opportunity to talk to a different audience and just sort of put what we do out there, I think it’s an interesting opportunity for us and also, to get to spread a positive message about believing in yourself. Me and the guys, we’re obviously not supermodels and don’t come from rich backgrounds, so it is sort of like “oh hey, if we can do it, anyone can do it”.
Your latest album "Nouns" was released in early May and I really enjoyed it. How was the writing and recording process for it?
>It was recorded in 3 different studios and a lot of writing was done in between tours and while we were on tour over the summer with Mika Miko in Europe. So yea, it was done at different times and different places and then we kind of mashed it all together.
You guys have released a lot of 7''s and EPs over the last 3 years since you have been a band.
Do you feel your sound has changed much between each of the releases?
>I think, if anything, we’ve just gotten more comfortable in writing and also I think we’re having more fun exploring more sounds.
Since you are with Sub Pop, I wanted to ask how they treat you guys? Do they give you a streaming supply of steaks, hookers, and limos?
>Ha ha, no. Nothing extravagant. Just a lot of support in other ways. “Nouns”, the CD, comes with a 72-page color booklet and I think, you know, it is really supportive of Sub Pop for us to be able to come up with this idea and tell it to them and, you know, without batting an eye they go “Yea, sure, do that”. So it’s more opportunity to explore more ideas.
What are some of the bands that you listened to when you grew up? As well as what bands influence your sound now?
>I was a huge Sonic Youth fan and I was a big Jesus Lizard fan. In terms of the influences, I feel like it all kind of comes in from different places. I like the stuff that’s a little noisier so I sort of stick to that. If it had some kind of flow I didn’t understand or I didn’t know where the sound was coming from, I found that more interesting than the straight ahead drums and guitars.
How is the tour going for "Nouns?"
>We’re just going to start our US tour on Saturday with Abe Vigoda. We went to Europe and did some festivals and shows over there, that was a lot of fun. It helps us get back into the writing process, but we have so much fun playing live and touring. Some of the earlier songs we were writing, we maybe hadn’t toured as much so we didn’t really know what that was all about or how the songs were going to play live. Since then, when we were writing “Nouns”, we wanted to write songs that would be really fun to play live.
Which song do you guys like to play the most live?
>I think it changes from night to night. I think a song like “Eraser” is really fun to play live.
What is something that you guys can't live without while on the road?
>Vegan food, Dean and I are both vegan. When we were on the road, we tried to find the vegan restaurants or the health food stores for something good to eat.
