Memphis May Fire - Interview

Can you start off by telling us your name and what you play in the band?

>Chase Ryan- singer
Jeremy Grisham- drums
Ryan Bentley- guitar
Austin Radford- bass
Kellen McGregor- guitar/vox

How did the writing and recording go for your self-titled EP?

>Well a few of us had been together in various versions of this band and we kinda just wanted to play something different that was more upbeat and fun, something we would have fun playing live; and something we hoped people would enjoy hearing and seeing live. We had those five songs written over a year ago, and those were the songs we took to the studio because they were the most finished songs we had to date.

How did it feel to work with Geoff Rockwell?

>Geoff is a great dude. He is so chilled out and was open to pretty much any idea we had. He made us feel comfortable, which was a big deal, because it was the first time for us recording in a real studio. We are pretty proud of that EP given the budget we had to work with, and how it was a long stretched out process over probably two months or so.

How is the progress on your full length album that is coming out in 2008 going?

>As of right now, we are home doing writing and are getting a rehearsal space to practice at. These new songs I think are some of our best songs I think, and are almost more complex I'd say, than our EP; and in a sense almost less "southern rock" that we get labeled as and more of just us.

What led you guys to Trustkill Records?

>It felt like home; and in the end, we chose it because we knew we would stand out against all of the bands on TK. Nothing against them at all, we just felt it would be a good idea to go with a label where we wouldn't blend in and made us feel welcome.

What are some of your musical and lyrical influences?

>I'd probably have to say definitely older stuff like AC/DC to Aerosmith to every hair metal band under the sun back then to stuff like STP and Pantera to Me Without You and modern bands in our genre. There is so much good music that has come out of the past couple years it's almost impossible to list all the recent bands we listen to. I'd have to say though, that when we are on the road, we pretty much can't stand listening to heavy music regularly; and we listen to a lot of older stuff. Well... it's "older" to us.

What kind of scene do they have around your part of Texas?

>The music scene down here is pretty sweet. The people down here really love music in every sense of that phrase. There are diehard fans of the bands down here, and they genuinely care about your band and your music. I don't think many people know about the music scene in north Texas, and there are a lot of really good bands that deserve to be seen and heard.

We hear that your live show is amazing. How has your touring been lately?

>We try and put every ounce of energy we have into our live show. After all, you pay money to see a "show", so we try and give you your money's worth. Touring has been an interesting learning experience. It has had both polar opposites to it- both the most fun we've ever had, and the roughest, most stressful thing we've ever endured. We love touring and know that it is the only way to reach people with our music- we don't expect to make money really, we just want to have fun and hope kids at our shows do as well.

Of the places you've played, where is your favorite venue?

>Hmm...biggest and best sound would probably The Foundry in Joplin, MO so far; but we love playing stripped down floor shows where our fans are inches away from us singing along to our songs.

What is something you guys can't live without while on the road?

>An iPod. Hands down.

Thanks for giving us some of your time, is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Skylinepress.net

>If you dig the music, please come check us out at a show; we love meeting and connecting with people and talking about random things!
