Clock Hands Strangle - Interview

Can we begin by introducing yourself and what you play in the band?

>Adam Burguet: percussion
Brian Bo: bass
Cristian Duran: piano, organ, trombone, glockenspiel
Nick Hill Jr: guitar
Todd Portnowitz: vocals, guitar

Your Myspace talks about the astrological meaning behind the title of your latest full length, "Redshift/Blueshift." What gave you guys the idea to make such a complementing concept for an album?

>”Redshift” and “blueshift” are terms from astronomy, rather than astrology—its the difference between a scientific study of the universe and the delusion that celestial bodies arrange themselves in “providential ways” that determine our earthly fates. The idea to split the album in half between the two astronomical concepts (“redshift” referring to expansion, “blueshift” to contraction) came as the most natural organization for the songs we’d written. The essential distinction between the two halves was made lyrically, though, Adam joined the band on drums just before we began recording the album, and so the first five tracks were written without drums, and the latter five with them. The album split itself, in a sense.

How was the writing and recording processes for the album and how was it different from your Ep, "Paper Flowers?"

>Recording “Paper Flowers” was like going through the drive-thru, we did all of the tracking in three half-days and we were mostly oblivious to the process. On “Redshift/Blueshift” we spent three months with our friends Jay and Juan, who’d set a studio up in their home, and had fun making it. We were able to craft something, rather than slap it together.

What are some of your influences for your sound, of both modern and older?

>We’re a band that’s heavily influenced by songwriters rather than bands, per say-- Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell. We’re into The Pixies, Wilco, Modest Mouse, bands doing things interesting lyrically as well as musically.

What drew you guys to Team Grizzly records? How do they treat you?

>Team Grizzly is a record label our bassist Brian put together with his friends Dan and Justin, so the relationship between them and us is more of a friendship than a business arrangement. They support whatever we’re doing, essentially. It’s the best possible situation.

You guys have played with keys, glockenspiel & trombone in addition to the normal band setup, but have you guys ever wanted to experiment with any unusual instruments or styles of play before?

>We’re more interested in a natural rock n’ roll sound. No one in the band is into using synthesizers or anything of that sort. As far as unusual instruments go, we’d have to know someone to borrow them from, because we certainly can’t afford them.

We noticed that you guys play a modest amount of Florida local shows, how are you guys being recieved in your home state?

>Generally, we’ve been getting great responses at shows, but you can't help but laugh when tons of bros at a bar walk out on your set. There’s a difference between simple entertainment, and entertainment that’s engaging, we’re hoping for the latter, but you definitely lose interest from listeners who refuse to be engaged, but merely entertained.

What is something that you guys can't live without while on tour?

>When we’re on the road we stop quite often to explore the natural surroundings, it’s a relief after spending nights in clubs and sleeping at random houses.

What is one of your most anticipated albums of 2007?

>Animal Collective’s new record is something we’ve all gotten into, but other than that there’s not much we’re “anticipating.” When something worthwhile comes out, word gets around.

Would you take the red pill or the blue pill?

>Definitely both.
