Alex (Vocals & Guitar)

All Time Low - Warped Tour Interview

Can you guys first introduce yourself to us and tell us what you play/do in the band?

>I'm Alex and I sing and play guitar for All Time Low.

On the heels of your sucessful EP "Put Up or Shut Up", you guys are putting the finishing touches on you new album, "So Wrong, It's Right." How was the writting and recording process for it compared to your first album and 2 EPs?

>It was really fluent, and really cool actually. We hadn't written in a long time so a lot of the first ideas really just kept rolling and we have a lot to write about you know and so when we got in the studio with Squire, we saw eye to eye on almost everything so it really went very smoothly and even though we stressed out about a lot of things in trying to make sure the songs were perfect. You know looking back at it, it was pretty good.

Well that actually covers my next question about the recording process with Matt Squire. But I know I felt busy in high school, but you guys were balancing both your musical career and school. How was it to be still in high school and to be putting out albums on a pretty respected indie label?

>Umm it was pretty crazy, obviously we had a lot in common with a lot of things. Our parents were worried and all of that stuff but i think that once it started coming down to the end of the school year, they all kind of saw that we were turning this into something. Eventually we had to talk them into the deal.

So what drew you guys to Hopeless records? And are you guys into their brand of good natured benefactory they are known for?

>They do more than just music, they stand for good causes, they run the Take Action tour and you know they do Sub City Records which basically funds non-profit organizations and bands. It's a good family to be a part of.

So you guys support everything Hopeless is doing with the label then?

>Oh absolutely, we totally back it.

We see that you guys note Blink 182 and Green Day as major influences, as you guys have covered Blink several times. What were your thoughts when Blink went sour after so long?

>Oh dude, that was one of the lamer moments of my life right there, I was pretty bummed out to be honest. I wasn't stoked on Angels and Airwaves to be quite frank, I think Plus 44 is pretty good. But neither of those bands will ever compare to Blink 182.

So it was kinda like how metal bands view Pantera's break-up/Dimebag's death?

>Yea it was pretty big like that.

What are some of your other influences for this record and in general?

>Ummm on the new CD we went with a lot of different equations. From Jennifer Lopez to Jimmy Eat World. Seriously. So it's a pretty broad spectrum of styles.

We know you guys got your name from New Found Glory's song "Head On Collision," but were there any names that you had thought of before siding with All Time Low?

>Oh man. Ummm.. I'm trying to think. We went through some terrible ideas. I think at some point we were gonna call ourselves Never Wreck or something like that. We were gonna try for Centerfold, because it sounded kinda dirty, but that was taken.

So basically you kinda went on myspace and searched your ideas to see if they were taken or not?

>I think so, I think that's what we did, we used google too.

How are you guys enjoying the 13th year of Warped Tour? Many people think that it makes this years tour lucky, what do you think?

>Oh yea dude. I think the lucky theme is actually pretty sweet. But I mean this is the first warped tour that we've been on the whole thing and I couldn't be happier. We feel blessed, it's so much fun. I'm not gonna complain saying the warped tour is too tough, too rigorous, too hot. But I couldn't really think of a better way.

Yea and seems like pop punk pretty much dominates the tour this year. So many people seem to be cool with that.

>Yea. It's definitely different. But that's because music in general has gone in a different direction these days. With new trends and all.

What is something you guys can't live without on tour, as well as where is your favorite place to stop and eat on the road?

>I cannot live without Swedish Fish.

Are there any albums coming out this year that you guys are particularyly looking forward to hearing?

>Oh man, the Paramore CD is already out, but I was pretty stoke on that and I love it. I'm trying to think of what else is coming out

Yea there is so much coming out these days, It's hard to keep track of it all.

>There really is so much. I can't think of anything.

Thanks so much for answering our probing questions! Is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Skylinepress.net?

>Basically just thank you for checking us out and come hang out with us out at the Warped Tour.

One last thing though, Pernell from SLP wanted me to add one little thing at the end "Gaithersburg, MD reppin da 301"

> Haha. That's cool dude. Tell him I said whatup. Thanks man.
