First off I'd like to congratulate you on your guys' latest
release "Pressure the Hinges".
>Thank you very much.
How long did it take to record the album?
>We spent six weeks in the actual studio, and then the mixing process
took an additional couple of weeks. We spent around four months writing the
songs I believe.
What sort of stuff were you guys listening to while in the process
of creating the effort?
>I was listening to my usual AC/DC and Def Leppard, which if you pay attention is kind of apparent in some of the music. The other guys were listening to a lot of rock bands with good
melodies for influence when writing vocals.
With all of the words of encouragement and ridicule you guys have
received in going on without Jimmy Ryan, how do you guys deal with it?
>We really appreciate all of our fans who have stuck with us and supported
Stephen. He has obviously made us a more well rounded band. We are still
good friends with Jimmy, and to all those who find the need to start
rumors otherwise, or that we kicked him out, you are mistaken. We take it
in stride, we know by now that every move we make is going to be
scrutinized by some and appreciated by others. The only thing we can do is
what we feel we should.
Would you say that more people are encouraging your efforts?
>We have the best fans in the world, and your support means everything to
us . We would be nothing without you.
What do you think the biggest difference is between "Pressure the
Hinges" and "When Everything Falls" or even the earlier "Burning
Bridges"?
>We spent the most time writing this album compared to the
others . We grew a lot as songwriters and musicians and tried some new
things with song style and structure. We wanted to spread our wings a
little on this record, and I think it shows. Obviously, the addition
of Stephen has had a great impact on our sound, as well as the songwriting process.
Stephen is also a musician, and contributed musically to three of the songs on the
album . Burning Bridges in particular was a very rushed and immature
effort , even though it contains some crowd favorites. I don't think you
can even compare it to Pressure the Hinges in any way. We wrote 8 of those
songs within about two weeks of when we recorded it, haha.
How has touring with From Autumn to Ashes been?
>It was amazing, I love those guys a lot. We became very good friends
With them over the 10 weeks that we were together, and I think every one of them
is amazing.
I find it kind of weird that you both had recent lineup changes
and major events that led up to fans wondering if you each would go
on... have you guys ever talked about this sort of thing?
>We brought it up every once and a while for kicks. But we are all so
content with our current lineups that it wasn't really an issue.
For the original members of the band... How was the change from
your guys' demos to "Burning Bridges" like? You went from a subtle
post-hardcore/rock act right into a pretty intense metalcore act...
What made you guys change?
> I think the fact that we barely had time to write Burning Bridges contributed to that. We didn't have time to
write songs that showcased the melodic aspect of the band, so we were kind of forced into the whole
breakdown after breakdown routine. A lot of kids think that we started off super heavy, then turned more melodic, when it was actually the other way around. We are finally really getting back to our roots.
For those who were in the band before the change of vocalist...
How was it that you came across Stephen?
>We played shows with his band "New Day Awakening" a couple times when we
went through Denver , and kept an eye on him because we knew Jimmy was
leaving . He was our first choice when we were looking for a replacement
for our European tour, and at first he said no, ahha. But then he called me
back and agreed to do the tour. We all knew from the first practice
with him that he was the one.
Do you think it may have been easier just to myspace one of the
many acts that try to mimick your sound and just steal their vocalist?
>Haha Ha, well that would have been one way of doing it. We had the
opportunity to hang out with Stephen though and knew he was a cool guy,
which is very important when considering a new band member.
Stephen was a great choice though... How was it like making the
transition between vocalists ?
>It was pretty natural feeling, because we knew for a few months that JImmy was leaving, so we were all prepared
for it. And Stephen is so easy to get along with, it was a very smooth transition.
Any opinions of Jimmy's new project "Trenches" featuring Joel of
Burning Bridge Recordings?
>I honestly haven't got a chance to really listen to it, but I wish them the best of luck.
Was it any sort of surprise to see that he was taking part in a
new effort? Or had you anticipated him joining a band just to mess
around in?
>I figured he would join something new, he likes having
something new to focus on.
On a less serious note... What would you think if Peyton Manning
had gotten eaten by a Bear before the super bowl?
>Well the only bears at the super bowl were pretty incompetent, so the bear probably would
have eaten itself, leaving way for Payton to become the champion that
he is.
Being a Chicago Bears fan... I find it quite necessary to give you
Colts fans a hard time. So give me 5 reasons why you think Peyton
Manning shouldn't have failed at winning the super bowl like his father
did?
>He didn't fail, Rex Grossman is a village idiot, we had a stronger
team , Payton is the best at his field, and go Colts. haha.
In all honesty though... do you actually think a colt would beat a
bear in a fight ?
>It would outrun it, and if the bear finally caught it, he'd probably fumble
it
