He Is Legend - Interview

What can you tell us about the new album of "Suck Out The Poison"?

>I would say "Suck Out The Poison" is totally different then our old albums. I feel like we were not only a lot smarter coming into this album, but I also feel like we really poured our hearts into this one. In my eyes, I got to do just what I wanted while working with the rest of the band, and I'm stoked that kids are finally seeing it and checking it out.

How do you yourself compare the new album to your last record of "I Am Hollywood"?

>When we came out with "I am Hollywood, we were so much younger back then. We were just kids, and it was like we were trying to appeal to what people wanted to see. I don't think it was so much of what we wanted to write, but more like we were just trying to fit in. "Suck Out The Poison" is so much different and matured to our style. We learned so much since that last album, and I think we know now more of what we want, compared to back then. The songs we've made just feel more raw, and show a lot more heart. I think we wound up with just what we wanted.

How did you guys get the title "Suck Out The Poison" for the new record?

>We came up with the title "Suck Out The Poison" for this new record just because of the way the album sounds and feels. It was just fitting for us.

What are you hoping fans get out of this new cd?

>With this record, we wrote more for ourselves. It was us doing stuff different. We're hoping fans can just look at the art inside the album and what it is that we've created, and we're hoping that fans can start to see more so into the music itself.

After releasing the new album, what response have you seen coming from most of the fans after they've gotten a chance to hear it?

>We feel so highly with the way the new record sounds. There's fans out there that dig it, but still there's some of those kids that keep saying to play the older shit and can't get past the older albums. The only thing I have to say to them is, playing these songs, we're finally changing to what we want to be.

How long did you guys work on "Suck Out The Poison" between the writing and recording, before you guys found it ready for it to hit shelves inside stores?

>I do write a lot, but the music itself took about two months in writing. We went in around April to record. We were really rushed with this though. Like, we toured our asses off while still under the pressure, but I think we did pretty good on it, and wound up with a good outcome.

You have a lot of creative ideas that you use in your lyrics, such as fairy tale like creatures for characters and plots in your songs, what was inspiring you when writing these lyrics?

>I was reading a lot a lot. I Looked into things like big media hypes, and it was different and interesting to the public, so I really checked into those. I was looking into a bunch of different authors, I dunno, like, I'm a big Tom Waits fan, so I was really checking him out. I was listening to a lot of different types of fold rock, indy, and a lot of sad music. I was checking out music by people like Elvis Costello, just to develop my standpoint. But for the most part, I was basically trying real hard to keep away from listening to other newer bands that are around right now. After shows, we were coming out to our van, and going from city to city listening to shit like Korn, Manson, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, and those other nu-metal bands that no one likes to admit to listening to, and doing it just because it helped us get that different sound. It just gets tiring listening to the same thing over and over ya know?

Describe how you guys work together on writing the songs? Is it a process where you write out the lyrics, and the band runs off of that? Or is it all a process of the rest of the band putting together a song and then you adding the lyrics later?

>Everyone basically brings their own things for the band to check out. Adam and Steve write a majority of the music, and I'm pretty comfortable with what it is that they're writing and giving to us most of the time. I come in with stuff, but normally I run off what they write, then I just go from there with the lyrics and vocals.

The biggest amount of talk on the new album is the change in style and sound vocal wise. Were you concerned that fans on the previous record might look at this in a negative way?

>I think there's some fans looking at the vocals negatively, but those are the ones wanting just "I Am Hollywood". We put ourselves through hell to get this album just how we wanted it, and I feel more confident with my voice now then I ever have, and I love it. I think before I just wanted to give people what they wanted to hear. With this record, I'm just so comfortable with it, and it's just the style I'm looking for. We do what it is that we want, and that my sound conceited, but like any artist when they're making an art piece, they're doing what they feel most comfortable creating.

Playing live, what is your favorite song to play?

>My favorite song to play? My favorite to play would probably be the last track on the new album ( "(((Louds" ). The song's aggressive, kick ass, different, and shows exactly what it is that we love to play. But I'll say that all the songs are pretty fun to play.

What would be the perfect tour for you guys and who would be on it?

>Well right now, I'd have to go with Mastedon, Rob Zombie, Queens Of The Stone Age, And Foo Fighters. It would be cool to play on stage with any of those bands, we're such huge fans of them.

With you guys being on tour a lot, what is the craziest story that you're willing to share with us?

>Well there's always a different one for each guy, but most of our crazy stories have to do with like pranks that we do with the other bands we're usually touring with. We were on tour with Misery Signals somewhere in Canada right? Well they threw this chicken broth shit onto our wind sheild, and that turned into us winding up in a muddy ditch and being stuck there. We got out for a while to check it out, and try to figure out how we were going to get out, so we left the van door open. And I dunno if you've ever been in Canada, but there's tons of mosquitos. So many mosquitoes flew into our van while the door was open, and they were just everywhere inside it. We drove forever with those things in there, and had to sleep in it with them constantly biting us. It was terrible. I'd like to say we're doing the same

How would you describe a He Is Legend show for any fan who's never gotten to see your live performance.

>We really bring the party and a kickass show. Just one word to sum it up... "fun".

That about sums up this interview, thank you so much for your time. Is there anything else that you'd like to leave the readers of Skylinepress.net with?

>We appreciate all that fans that are out there for us and supporting us right now, it seriously means so much. But yeah, for those of you who haven't gotten to check out "Suck Out The Poison" yet, get out there and get the record man.
