Minutes Too Far - Interview

Congrats on the success of your latest effort. How long did it take to write it and track it?

>Blake: Well, that's a little tricky. It technically took about 3 weeks to track it, in two different sessions a year apart from each other. We recorded half of the record in Berkeley, CA in the spring of 2005 for an EP, and then when we got picked up by the label, we went back in the studio to record the other half in spring of 2006. As far as writing it, there are a couple of older songs on there that we had already, but for the most part, we locked ourselves in rehearsal spaces in the weeks leading up to the tracking sessions and hammered out songs for hours.

>Kris: It took awhile. We started writing songs for "Let it Roll" in the autumn of '04. We released 5 songs on an EP, called "Let It Roll" haha, in May of '05. We started getting some label attention and we finally signed with Band Recordings in the fall of '05. We then recorded 5 more songs for the album, a few old ones and a few new ones. We then released the finished product in July of this year! It was almost a 2 year process all together, and we're very proud of it!

>Steve: Some time from Jan 05-March 06.

Did you write the words first and then add the music, or wrote the music first and then added the words?

>Blake: Danny and Kris write all the songs, lyrics and music. I'm almost certain they write the music first every time. They might have a lyrical idea going into it, but its not versed out at the beginning.

>Kris: Well me and danny both write songs for the band. I can only answer that one for myself. Each song is a bit of a journey. Sometimes I'll get one little catch phrase in my head, and write a whole song off it. Sometimes I'll write the whole song based off a bass line, like "Eat Your Heart Out". Sometimes, it all just comes at once. It's always different.

>Steve: Just about a combination of the two.

What were your influences on this album, and were there any underlying messages that you were putting forth?

>Blake: Our influences all vary, but we wrote half of the album right after Jimmy Eat World's "Futures" came out, so I know we were all listening to that a lot, and I think we took some cues. I don't like to think that we ripped them off, but they're definitely an influence. They're no-nonsense, they do what they want (despite it not being trendy), and the songs are most important at the end of the day. We feel the same way about our music. We don't really have any underlying messages throughout the record. We try to write so that the listener can try to make up his/her own mind about what the song is saying.

>Kris: Jimmy Eat World, Tom Petty, MxPx, AC/DC, we tried to get a bit of everything on there. On this particular record we weren't trying to put anything specific forth. We wanted to write songs that made people think and reflect on their own love lives. I've heard people say "Gimme a Reason" was about a relationship gone wrong with a girl, and I know that certainly wasn't what I was referring to when I wrote it. But I think that's great!!! I like people to take what they want from the music and words. That's what it's all about for us.

>Steve: Talk to danny and kris about all that stuff.

How has the albums tour been?

>Blake: August was a tough month, but for the most part, the tours have been a lot of fun. We've been fortunate enough to be on tour with some really great bands this summer...The Wedding, Man Alive, and The Bleeding Alarm. Every single one of those guys are amazing and great to be all the time.

>Kris: Pretty sweet. The fans love the new songs, and still dig the old ones. We love getting out of town and meeting new peope. It's really cool.

>Steve: Its been alot of fun, but were still a baby band so we have a lot of hard work ahead of us.

What venue have you most enjoyed on the tour?

>Blake: Venue's are cool and all, but without kids there, it just doesn't > matter. I love a place called The Refuge in Amarillo, TX, mainly because > kids are always there and love music of all genres. But my favorite > "bells and whistles" venue is the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles. That > place is just classy.

>Kris: Probably the Brewerey in Raleigh, NC. That place was amazing. The kids there were really into new music and Tom, who runs the place, was a really rad guy. We can't wait to go back there.

>Steve: I would probably say any venue in the mid-west.

What songs are your personal favorite to play live?

>Blake: Eat Your Heart Out has been fun lately. It has a dance quality to it, and I'm a sucker for cheesy 808 kick drum samples shaking the stage.

>Kris: We have this old Tom Petty cover we like to dust off and roll out every once in awhile. That's probably the most fun for us. As far as our songs go, I would have to say "Something You Really Oughta Know". That songs peppy and it has some great gang shouts in it. We love when the crowd yells em' back to us.

>Steve: Backbeats in L.A., and Eat Your Heart Out.

What food pitstop on the road do you hit up the most?

>Blake: Wendy's. But I'm not complaining, I love that place.

>Kris: QT! It's this sweet gas station in the Midwest. They have all the soda's in the world, and delicious hot dogs for only one dollar! If we see one we stop, no matter the time or how recent our last meal was!

>Steve: QT (Hot dogs are killer).

What bands have you most enjoyed playing with?

>Blake: I can't pick just one...Every band we've toured with has been a blast. The Wedding, Man Alive, The Bleeding Alarm, Happy Endings, Let Go...I can't play favorites.

>Kris: Happy Endings, our good buds from Springfield. Let Go, those guys rule (their lead singer Jamie produced half of our album), the Wedding from Arkansas, Fresh Sunday from OKC, and those crazy Canadians we just got off tour with The Bleeding Alarm. We had a lot of fun with those guys!

>Steve: Man Alive, The Bleeding Alarm, and the Wedding.

What is something you guys can't live without on tour?

>Blake: ipods. the best invention of the last 20 years, no doubt.

>Kris: Burger King. If you fill out comment cards on the back of their receipts, you can get a whopper for free!

>Steve: Soda

Are their any artist's albums that you are looking forward to this year?

>Blake: Oh, definitely. I think Jimmy Eat World and Counting Crows are both in studio right now, so I'm sure the albums won't release until early 07, but I'm still very excited. Counting Crows haven't had a studio album in 4 years, and they're one of my favorites, so I'm anxious to hear the new stuff.

>Kris: I heard the new Jimmy Eat World is in the works. Can't wait for that! Our friends Let Go might be releasing some new material. That would be really cool to hear.

>Steve: Happy Endings and Jimmy Eat World.

What's the craziest or weirdest thing a fan has done for you?

>Blake: No one has really crossed any "crazy" or "weird" lines....yet.

>Kris: In New Jersey this girl had me sign her butt. She had pants on, of course, but I still felt a little awkward.

>Steve: Some of our fans from OKC have travled long distances to watch us play.

Thanks for answering our querys, we wish you guys luck in everything you do. Is their anything to the readers of Skylinepress that you would like to say?

>Blake: If you get a chance, and have an extra few bucks, buy the album. We'd really appreciate it. And then check our sites so that you know when we're coming to your town.

>Kris: Come out to a show and hang out with us if you're bored. We can play any Weezer song you request! And our music is kind of fun too.

>Steve: Keep on rockin in the free world.
