Evaline - Interview

How do you guys feel about the new record coming out in a week or so?

>This EP has been blood, sweat, and tears for us. We spent every ounce of energy we could conjure up in order to track thesesix songs the way we wanted them to be. As a whole, this EP captures the emotion and energy behind evaline. It represents what we are about and gives a glimpse of what more there is to come from us.

How long did it take to piece the album together?

>Two or three months of work spread over about six months.

Tell us how the experience was working/living with Quinn?

>It was an experience none of us will ever forget! As soon as we got to Quinn's house we dove right into working on the EP. After the first week or so, we had a way of working together that was harmonious; we fed off of each others energy. It worked out beautifully. The greatest part was that it was as if we weren't even working, more like hanging out and playing music nonstop. We would spend nights tinkering around with effects and random household objects for hours on end in order to create coloration for the songs. We would get so lost and involved in the process and wouldn't stop until the light of morning began to creep through the windows. It "dawned" on us (after several weeks of tracking) that we were creating something beautiful and full of energy. Only until the last night could we sit back and finally listen to what we created, while letting out the worlds biggest sigh of relief. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, alright.

Do you feel the album came out the way you all wanted it to?

>With the given circumstances and certain time limitations, it came out better than I think any of us thought it would.

If you guys had to pick a favorite track on the album what would it be and why?

>"A Protest In Lines Too Thin To Read," because the song takes you through a lot of dynamics and emotions. All of which climax into a powerful ending & singing "We won't give up, we won't give up now." It just leaves you feeling good, you know?

Who have been some big influences in the type of music you guys choose to portray?

>The originality and atmosphere of Radiohead, the ambience and climactic energy of Sigur Ros, and the balls and beauty behind Muse. Not to mention countless other artists and bands that continually influence and inspire us.

Could you briefly give us a short little run through of how Evaline came to be?

>The original three members of the band (Dominic DiCiano, Christian Lewis, and Steve Pedersen) have been friends since elementary and Jr. High school. We started playing music together duting our sophomore year of high school. Back then it was only about having fun and making enough noise to drive our parents and neighbors absolutely nuts. Things began to get serious when we found an awesome drummer (Steve Forrest) to join the beautiful mess, as well as our singer (Richard Jonathan Perry). With RJ and Steve in the band, we finally started to click and began to build the foundation for what is now evaline.

Were there any tracks that didn't make the cut, that we might be able to see sometime soon?

>Well, there were a couple slower songs that we just didn't have time to contribute to. Without a doubt, they will resurface in some shape or form on our full length.

Continuing on, whats your guys favorite song to play live?

>Either "La De Da" or "A Protest In Lines Too Thin To Read", because there is just so much energy in those two. Not to mention they both set a great vibe, one that we like at least.

Any funny stories you guys would like to share that have happened in the past?

>On our tour with Head Automatica, we happened to pick up an arsenal of bottle rockets and firecrackers... while driving through Oregon at night, we thought it would be a great idea to light a bottle rocket out of a window in our van and get the action on film. Our plan was to wait for the oncoming cars to clear out of the way, light the bottle rocket, put it out the window, close the window on the stick-end of the bottle rocket (so it would shoot off outside the van)... all in one swift movement. Everything went according to plan until we closed the window and realized that there were sparks flying inside the van! What happened next was the equivalent of 10,000 savage monkeys pillaging a banana factory. We went ape shit trying to put it out. Then we realized that the bottle rocket was still hanging out the window and the sparks had come from the burning wick that fell off of the bottle rocket while putting it out...

In the music scene today, what are you guys anxious to hear in 2006?

>Personally, I'm waiting for Radiohead to come back and blow the world away with a new record. Also, our friends in a band called "In Reverent Fear" are releasing a new album soon, which we are really excited to hear. Also, the new Rx Bandits album just came out and it'l blow your ass.

Where did you guys come up with the album name from?

>From the EP itself: postpartum modesty. a portrait of skin This ep is a mosaic of themes loosely set in their common foundation (which could vaguely be described as life). the title "postpartum modesty. a portrait of skin." depicts life in a physical sense being looked in on by ones self... the innocent modesty that comes with birth. the growing physical awareness of ones own vessel(body) leading to the imagery of the body as a piece of art. just as a portrait, implies the possibility of scrutiny, which could be self inflicted or fear of infliction by others. and how a growing fixation on this can lead to art devalued by its own lack of self worth (the art being ones self).... who is to say what beauty is? we will never be to ourselves what we are to others.

What certain things keep you busy being on the road?

>We are all big Nintendo Fans, So everyone stocked up on Nintendo DS's and plenty of games. We also bought a suitcase full of used books. For the most part though, our time is occupied with preparing for shows and promoting our band. We like to get out in the cowds and promote our band on a personal level.

What can't you guys live without?

>Food, water, Air, and Music. We try not to get too caught up with material posessions, but we definitely couldn't live without Dawson's Creek. Dom actually watches that show religiously.

How would you guys describe yourselves to someone who hadn't got the chance to hear you before?

>Evaline simply put is a dynamic rock band that draws its influences from countless musicians and bands. We play music that is true to us; music that can shake your pants off or sometimes lull you to sleep. It is a musical journey that is ever changing and constantly progressing. We invite anyone who listens to our songs to share the journey.

Last but not least, I'd like to thank you so much for your time, as I let you go, is there anything else you'd like to say to the viewers of Skyline Press?

>May all beings be filled with loving kindness and compassion for one another. Expect much more Namaste.
